Device Icons

Each device gets an icon for what it is. HomeMapper picks the most specific one it can from what it has recorded about the device: its model, the services it advertises, its HomeKit category, its Home Assistant device class, and its name.

When none of that points to anything specific, the device shows the icon of the protocol that found it instead, such as a house for a Home Assistant device. A newly discovered kind of device can show that icon until a HomeMapper update adds an icon for it.

Protocol Badges

A protocol badge shows which protocol found a device. Each protocol has its own icon and color:

HomeKit

Home Assistant

IP Network

Thread

Matter

Badges appear in a few places:

  • Beside the device icon on the Devices screen and on Rooms: a small stack of protocol icons.
  • In the Found via column on iPad and Mac: the protocols that found the device in the most recent scan.
  • On iPhone cards: colored pills with the protocol's name, when Found via is turned on in Field Settings.

A device found by more than one protocol shows a badge for each. The Matter badge means the device supports Matter. On HomeMapper Pro the stack beside the icon shows every protocol that found the device; on the free version it shows the main one only.

Icon Colors

A device's icon takes the color of its main protocol. The main protocol follows your Primary Platform setting in Settings > Discovery: Apple Home or Home Assistant, whichever you chose, then the other one. A device neither of them found takes Thread's color, and then IP Network's.

Gray Icons

Gray means a protocol was missing from the most recent scan. Each protocol is judged on its own. The device icon turns gray only when its main protocol was missing.

How a missing protocol shows depends on where you look:

  • Beside the device icon: its badge turns gray and the others keep their color. If HomeKit found a device in the last scan but IP Network didn't, the IP Network badge is gray and the HomeKit one isn't. On the free version only the main protocol's badge appears here.
  • In the Found via column: a missing protocol is left out, so the column lists only the protocols that found the device in the most recent scan.
  • On iPhone cards: the pills never turn gray. They list every protocol that has found the device, including one missing from the last scan.

Tap a gray device to open the detail popover. It lists the missing protocols under "Reachability Issue", shows when each last found the device, and offers a trash button to remove the device if it's gone for good.

Battery

The Battery column shows a battery icon and a percentage:

  • Green: 50% and above
  • Yellow: 20% to 49%
  • Red: below 20%
  • Low in red: the device reports a low battery but no percentage
  • A full battery with a bolt: the device is charging
  • — (dash): the device doesn't run on a battery

Toolbar Icons

The buttons along the top of the Devices screen:

  • House: the Place menu on Pro, labeled with the Place you're looking at, or the home menu on Free. It appears when you have more than one Place or home to choose from. On Pro, the house is filled in when you've switched a home off in the Place menu. On Free, it is always filled in.
  • Share (a square with an arrow): exports the device list as a CSV spreadsheet.
  • Sliders: opens Field Settings, where you choose the columns and the sort order.
  • Question mark: opens Help for the screen you're on. Scan, Rooms and Topology have one too.
