iCloud Sync

It's your own iCloud. HomeMapper can keep parts of your setup in sync across your devices using your own iCloud. Nothing goes to a HomeMapper server, and your iCloud is as private as your device.

What syncs

When you're signed into iCloud, HomeMapper keeps four things in sync across your devices:

  • Room order and Home Assistant connections. The order you arrange your rooms in, and the Home Assistant instances you've added (their address, name, and whether they're enabled), sync through iCloud. Your Home Assistant password and tokens are not part of this.
  • Places. Your Places, which homes are in each, and the networks each Place is matched to. Which Place is selected and every Don't Ask Again answer stay on each device. See Places.
  • Your Home Assistant sign-in. The OAuth tokens HomeMapper gets when you connect Home Assistant sync through iCloud Keychain, end-to-end encrypted. This only works if you have iCloud Keychain turned on. If it's off, you'll sign in again on your other device.
  • Setup codes. The device setup codes you save sync through your private iCloud database, so they show up on your other devices. Saving and syncing setup codes is a Pro feature.

Scan results stay on each device. HomeMapper does not sync your discovered devices or scan history; those are local to the device that ran the scan.

No HomeMapper server involved

Everything above lives in your own iCloud, under your Apple Account. We can't see your room order, your Places, your Home Assistant connections, your sign-in, or your setup codes.

A setup code is just the number printed on a device's sticker or box, the same one you use to set the device up. It's your own data, stored in your private iCloud, the same as the rest of your setup. It never touches a HomeMapper server. Your Home Assistant sign-in is also kept in your own iCloud, end-to-end encrypted in iCloud Keychain.

Turning it on or off

iCloud Sync is on by default when you're signed into iCloud. The switch is in Settings > Advanced, under iCloud Sync.

Turning it off stops this device from syncing. It does not delete anything, here or in iCloud or on your other devices. It just stops this device from sending and receiving changes. Turn it back on and it picks up where your other devices left off.

iCloud Sync Now forces a sync right away instead of waiting, and the screen shows when the last sync happened.

If you're not signed into iCloud

The switch is disabled until you sign in. There's nothing to sync to without an iCloud account, so HomeMapper keeps everything local on this device.

Backups and restore

Restoring a backup makes that device's setup codes the authoritative set for your account. Your other synced devices then catch up to match it, and your room order and Home Assistant connections update too. If you're moving to a new device, restoring a backup there brings everything across at once. See the Backup section in Settings for how backups work.

Removing your data from iCloud

Settings > Advanced > Delete iCloud Data removes HomeMapper's setup codes, room order, Places and their saved networks, and Home Assistant connections from iCloud and turns iCloud Sync off on this device. The data on this device is kept, and you stay signed into Home Assistant here.

This works one device at a time. Another device that still has iCloud Sync on can upload its copy back, so to clear it everywhere, do this on each of your devices.

Setup codes that can't sync

A few setup codes can't sync. If a device has nothing stable for HomeMapper to match it by across devices, its code is marked Local only and stays on the device you saved it on. This is uncommon, and the marker is just so you know which codes won't appear elsewhere.
